The club secured qualification for the tournament, which will be held in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain from 12th to 22nd December,  after winning the Arabian Gulf League as part of a historic season that also saw the club win the Presidents Cup.

CONCACAF champion CD Guadalajara, from Mexico, has also qualified, with the winners of the UEFA Champions League, Liverpool, or reigning champions, Real Madrid, joining them for the final, which takes place on 26th May.

In 2017, Real Madrid won the competition, beating Brazilian side Grêmio in the final 1-0.
