Want to know when the stunning Louvre Abu Dhabi opens?

With so much buzz about the upcoming Louvre Abu Dhabi, our questions have finally been answered as the museum’s opening date has been revealed – and it’s sooner than you think!

Originally conceived ten years ago in an intergovernmental agreement between France and Abu Dhabi, the museum is finally due to open its doors on 11th November 2017. 

Adorned with an already iconic 180-metre patterned dome designed by architect Jean Nouvel, the museum will feature 23 galleries, an auditorium, a temporary exhibition space and a children’s museum for younger culture vultures.

Constructed around 55 distinct buildings, the so-called ‘museum city’ will show exhibitions featuring art from the prehistoric era right up to more contemporary styles, with a focus on human history, experience and transcending geographical borders.

On the programme for its first year will be approximately 300 works from key French institutions, including greats such as Leonardo da Vinci’s La Belle Ferronnière, Claude Monet’s Saint-Lazare station and Henri Matisse’s Still Life with Magnolia.

Adding to the buzz, the museum has already commissioned pieces from two artists to accompany the exhibitions.

Italian artist Giuseppe Penone will be presenting a four-part installation entitled Germination, while American artist Jenny Holzer has been commissioned to create three engraved stone tablets, which will feature excerpts from key historic cultural texts including Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah.

According to the website, general admission is set at AED 60, however, visitors aged between 13 and 22, are UAE education professionals will pay AED 30 for entry to the museum.

In addition, members of the museum’s loyalty programme, children under 13 years-old, ICOM or ICOMOS members, journalists and visitors with special needs as well as their companion will get free admission.
