The world loves fast food. How much? Well, the global industry is worth in excess of $570bn (over AED 2 trillion) – that’s more than the economic value of most countries. That’s a lot of burgers and fries.
With tasty food that’s available quickly, conveniently and at a low cost, the popularity of fast food continues to grow year on year.
While international companies take the lion’s share of the industry, many local businesses are in on the act serving up their own take on the most popular dishes in a flash.
Looking to build a reputation for delivering tasty food, fast, Al Khattafy has recently opened in the city.
The small venue, decked out to have the feel of an auto repair shop, with industrial metal countertops and a Mini Cooper crashing through the wall, certainly makes a bold statement with its décor.
And the food? Well, it’s not scared to be a little bold either. Here are two words you never thought you’d hear together: blue hummus. But we’ll get to that later.
The menu, which is on the small side, features a selection of salads, sides, burgers and desserts that you would expect with a few surprise ingredients included for good measure.
Coated in a tangy red sauce, the boneless chicken buffalo bites deliver exactly what you want from a starter: a crispy coating, tender meat and zesty kick from the sauce.
But the ribs are something else, arriving at the table with spots of blue hummus on the plate. Now, I don’t know why the hummus was blue – neon blue at that – but as for the flavour it was the hummus you know and love except for the alarming hue.
That said, the ribs themselves need no accompaniment. Tender, charred on the outside and incredibly moreish, the tasty meat outshines the colourful sidekick.
The K Beef is a classic burger, a beef patty topped with lettuce, onions, cheese, pickles and a zingy house sauce – a classic that I finish off with ease.
Offering something a little different, the Krunchy Chicken is topped with coleslaw, cheese, house sauce and, wait for it, Doritos. The aforementioned chips add a big crunch to the burger, making it stand out from your average chicken sandwich, but I still prefer my beef version.
Try some K Fries on the side; a large portion of crinkle cut fries comes topped with cheese, pickles, sour cream and jalapeños. It reminds me more of a portion of nachos than a crispy potato treat, but I enjoy them nonetheless, though I barely make a dent in the generous serving.
If you’re looking for a quick bite and a burger and fries is the order of the day, then check out Al Khattafy for yourself and see if it’s a new favourite.
