It’s official: 2017 is coming to a close, but before the clock strikes 12, there’s plenty of fun to be had as we count down to 2018

New Year is a time for reflection, celebration and sometimes reinvention, as people look to put last year behind them and take on a “new year, new me” philosophy and embrace optimism.

But before the resolutions start and gym memberships spike, it’s a good chance to gather with family and friends and be grateful, as we look forward to another year spent with our nearest and dearest.

So what’s going on this New Year in Abu Dhabi?

Family festivities

Helping to get you into the spirit, the NYE Countdown Village will be building an atmosphere from 28th to 31st December. With a retail zone featuring 40 vendors, a balloon park, glowing kites, graffiti wall, a New Year wishing well and live performances, there’s fun for the whole family. On New Year’s Eve, musical performances will begin celebrations early with Tamer Hosni at 8pm and Hussein Al Jasmi at 9.45pm. From AED 40. Bringing the year to a close, the Winterland Carnival is helping you celebrate the big countdown on the run-up to New Year’s Eve. With festive attractions including a snow park, funfair games, carnival rides, food stalls and more, there’s plenty to keep families busy. And, on New Year’s Eve itself, families can stay up late to see a fireworks display at midnight to mark the start of 2018. Excited to see some fireworks this NYE? Gather the family and get yourself along to Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri and see a spectacular display in the night’s sky after LED dancers, drummers and performers entertain the crowd during the countdown to the big event. There will be fireworks at du Arena – but not the kind you’ll find flying through the sky. Ringing in 2018, superstar singer Katy Perry is coming to town to kickstart festivities with a performance on Yas Island for the whole family. If you’re a fan of the pop princess, you really don’t want to miss out when she takes to the stage at du Arena on New Year’s Eve. Expect her to belt out top hits, including ‘Firework’, which Buzzfeed called the “ultimate confidence-boosting anthem for all ages of the family”. From AED 350. du Arena, Yas Island. From 6.30pm. If you were hoping for real fireworks, don’t panic. Yas Island never likes to disappoint. A six-minute spectacle will take place near du Forum so you can catch the display for free from anywhere nearby as the clock strikes twelve.

Revellers are invited to head to Al Maryah Island where more than 14,000 people are expected to gather for the big night. Live performances from Kadim Al Sahir and Balqees will get the crowd going before a spectacular fireworks display lights up the night’s sky after the clock strikes 12. Say hello to 2018 with music at The Sportsman’s Arms, where a live band will be belting out tunes on the terrace.
