Life-changing surgery could be more readily available to children in the UAE as a non profit organisation prepares to host an initiative in the capital.
Operation Smile UAE, which provides medical assistance to children suffering from cleft lip and palate around the world, will be offering free corrective surgery to children in need in Abu Dhabi as part of its June mission.
Since being established in 2011, Operation Smile UAE has funded 16 missions in various developing countries, providing more than 3,500 children with life-changing surgery.
“We believe every child deserves a chance to smile,” Morag Cromey-Hawke, executive director of Operation Smile UAE, said.
“Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft palate, and a lot of these people do not have access or the means to seek corrective surgery. That’s why what we do is so important.
“It gives us great pride to be able to offer our services to people in the UAE because there are people in this country who are unable to afford the surgery for their child.
“Those who suffer with these conditions can have speech problems, are unable to eat or drink properly and can suffer socially as well.
“Surgery like this is truly life changing and we invite families of children with a cleft palate or lip to step forward and get in touch with us.”
