US tennis ace Serena Williams will hold court in the capital as the 10th edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship hosts a special women’s match for the first time in its history.
Picking up the racket for the first time since the birth of her daughter and winning the Australian Open, where she bested sister Venus earlier this year, the 23-time Grand Slam tennis champion will take to the court on 30th December in a face-off with Latvian world number seven and current French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko.
The exhibition match between the female aces will be the first ever women’s tennis match at the annual event, which opens the global tennis season.
Williams and Ostapenko complete an already star-studded line-up for the upcoming men’s matches, which includes world number five Dominic Thiem, as well as Novak Djokovic, Kevin Anderson, Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreño Busta and Andrey Rublev.
Commenting on her participation in the upcoming tournament, Williams said: “I am delighted to be returning to the court in Abu Dhabi for the first time since the birth of my daughter in September.
“The Mubadala World Tennis Championship has long marked the beginning of the men’s global tennis season and I am excited and honoured to be making my comeback as part of the first women to participate in the event. I look forward to seeing the fans in Abu Dhabi at the 10th edition of the championship very soon.”
