Five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova will debut at this year’s Mubadala World Tennis Championship.
The female champ will make her tournament debut at the annual event taking place on 19th to 21st December at the International Tennis Centre in Zayed Sports City.
Maria will face 18-year-old court sensation Amanda Anisimova.
The budding superstar turned heads this year after beating world no. 4 Simona Halep to become the youngest American to march into the women’s French Open semi-finals since 1990.
Amanda is being touted as ‘the new Sharapova’ adding more hype to their upcoming match-up.
This latest announcement further bolstered this year’s line-up.
We reported just this week that 19-time Grand Slam ace Rafael Nadal and Russian star Daniil Medvedev are participating in the tournament.
“I’ve been told December is a great time of year to visit and I want everyone to come and join us in having some fun,” said Sharapova.
As for Amanda, the young ace had this to say:
“I will be making my first visit to Abu Dhabi and I want to make sure I’m bringing my A game to the Mubadala World Tennis Championship and show the spectators what I can do,” said the 18-year-old.
With the Mubadala World Tennis Championship brought forward a week from its usual spot on the calendar, the new dates, 19-21 December, will enhance the festival feel of the championship for both players and fans.
