The Founder’s Memorial, a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, has been unveiled in commemoration of the Year of Zayed.
In a ceremony held 100 years after the birth of the founder of the UAE, leaders gathered to witness the unveiling of the permanent tribute at a private event, ahead of the attraction’s opening to the public in the coming months.
At the centre of the monument, located next to the grounds of Emirates Palace, is an artwork by Ralph Helmick named the ‘Constellation’, which displays a three-dimensional portrait of Sheikh Zayed that can be experienced differently from various viewing points.
Made up of 1,300 geometric shapes suspended on more than 1,000 cables, the shapes will shine like stars at night providing a unique spectacle for visitors.
Aside from this, the 3.3 hectare attraction features landscaped gardens with local flora, and will serve as a place of learning through art, landscape, words, stories and multimedia experiences while celebrating the everlasting influence of Sheikh Zayed.
“Zayed’s legacy will remain a never-ending source of wisdom from which future generations draw inspiration as well as lessons of patriotism and dedication,” HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE vice president and prime minister, said.
“The Founder’s Memorial will continue to testify to the achievements of the founding leader and the sacrifices he made.
“His legacy is filled with stories of loyalty to the homeland, and it places a responsibility on us and on future generations to safeguard the gains, and build on the success stories so that our homeland remains a symbol of dignity and development.”
