These students want to celebrate the everyday heroes

Pupils at an Abu Dhabi school will be bringing the superheroes into the classroom and celebrating the value of community with the launch of a unique event to honour the outstanding contributions of those among them.

Set to be hosted at Al Dhafra Private School by grade 12 students on 8th March, Al Dhafra Comic-Con will explore the comic book universe with an event including cosplay, games and more.

With an overarching theme of leadership and creating a culture of kindness, the event brings together students to celebrate the contributions of members from the school community including nurses, cleaners and security guards, to show that there’s a bit of Batman in all of us – and that not all heroes wear capes.

“The school wouldn’t be a school if they weren’t here, we wouldn’t be here today without them,” explained grade 12 student Christine Ishak, one of the event’s organisers. “It’s important that they know that they have an important role within the school, and that they have an impact on us.”

Classmate Eman Al Shaami added: “These people don’t get the recognition that others do, and we want them to feel that they are valued, important and that we appreciate what they do for us.”

But it’s not just about the caped crusaders; the students also want to pass on this valuable message to their younger peers, too.

“The concept in the curriculum we are covering is leadership, and whether it’s Captain America or politicians, our grade 12 students can use this model to show leadership to their younger peers,” said Glen Dower, head of the school’s commerce department. “They can use those lessons they’ve learned in their years at school and help these students learn how to be a good student and a good person with integrity, love and honesty.”
