Hear some verses
Love culture and history? Take a trip to Al Ain where the traditional practice of spoken word performances is being kept alive, aiming to inspire the next generation of wordsmiths. The monthly Poetry Evenings centre around the reading of Nabati poetry by Emirati poets, as well as educational workshops hosted by UAE poets and writers. So if you have an interest in history and experiencing something unique to this region in stunning surroundings then this is the place to be. Free. Have a laugh
In need of comic relief? Well, help is at hand. Dealing a dose of funny direct to your eyes and ears, Yalla Laughs is back again this year to deliver some laughs to kick-start your weekend. With headliner and regular Simeon Goodson, performers Akshay Ahuja, Jon Boulton and Omar Kazim, it’s sure to be an evening of great laughs for the crowd packed on to the rooftop. Free. Do your bit
Keeping the legacy of Terry Fox alive, the Terry Fox Run returns to Abu Dhabi this weekend. Helping to promote fitness among the community and raise vital funds to help with cancer research here in the UAE, both children and adults can walk or run the 8.5km course along the Corniche early in the morning and feel good while doing good. Not got any plans? Get yourself along and break a sweat for a good cause, because your donation could make a huge difference to someone’s life. Free, but donations recommended when registering. Being held as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the Festival @ Masdar City is a two-day family event with a focus on being more green. Providing entertainment and education for children and getting them to learn while having fun, the event gives littles ones the chance to make a potted plant from recycled materials, explore the solar system and much more. What’s more, this year the festival will feature a Wall of Zayed where you can learn about the late leader’s legacy, and other attractions including a planetarium dome, a fairytale zone, a bazaar, an arcade alley and more. Play your part
If you like your theatre in bite-sized chunks then this is the ideal place for you. Back in Abu Dhabi for the third time, the Short+Sweet festival will see budding actors, directors and writers present their very own theatric works to audiences over two nights 0f engaging performances. With each work lasting no longer than ten minutes, theatregoers can expect a range of genres, topics and themes as each piece of work competes to win the competition. Fancy something a bit different? Enjoy some tee time
Some of the world’s best are back again to compete for the Falcon Trophy at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship until 21st January. Reigning champion Tommy Fleetwood will face stiff competition again this year from Rory McIlroy, Henrik Svenson, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and many more so it’s sure to be a weekend of great golfing. And if you’re not a sports fan, or have little ones in tow, you can grab a bite to eat and enjoy some entertainment while relaxing in the championship village away from the green. AED 50. Marvel at a movie
Showing another cinematic classic again this weekend, film fans can take a trip to Saadiyat Island to see a movie masterpiece. The 1959 epic Ben-Hur will be dominating the big screen, starring Charlton Heston in his Oscar-winning role as Judah Ben-Hur, a nobleman in Palestine who goes on a heroic odyssey.
