Seven simple ways to make the most of this weekend

We’re sure that you’ve already got that weekend feeling washing over you as the working week comes to a close.

Want to spend time with the family, see a film, soak up some culture or just let your hair down? We’ve picked seven of the best events taking place this weekend to make life that little bit easier for you.

Thursday 4th May

Boogie down to Yas


Are you ready to party into the late hours of the night and early hours of the morning? Then start your weekend off at the Boogie Box. Tristan Girault and Hassan Alwan will be on the decks pumping out house and techno beats on the shores of Yas Island that’ll surely get you moving your feet. See some amazing Arab cinema


Playing all weekend, the On Arab Geographies film fest will be screening some of the best films from this region in recent years. First up on Thursday is In The Last Days of the City followed by films including Omnia, Nearby Sky and Zeinab Hates the Snow as well as Q&A sessions with some of the films’ directors. Celebrating local filmmaking, the festival will screen some films that have previously never been shown in the capital. Friday 5th May

Get a move on


Do you want to get active this weekend? You’re in luck as Phil and Fabio are eager to share their knowledge of natural movements with you. Don’t worry if you’re not super fit as the three-hour workshop is designed for all levels. Phil and Fabio hope to change the way you think about movement and bring you back in touch with all your innate movement skills. A piece of cake


Do you want to create some yummy cupcakes? You and your kids can learn how to make three different types of cakes – vanilla, chocolate and raspberry – at this kids masterclass at jones the grocer. You will also be able to make your own frosting and decorate the cakes with fruit and chocolate. It’s a great activity to do with the kids, and after all, who doesn’t like cupcakes? Do you want to party this weekend? It’s not ‘Just a Dream’: American rapper, singer and songwriter Nelly will be performing live at Yas Island’s biggest nightclub. With hits such as ‘Dilemma’, ‘Hot in Herre’ and ‘Ride Wit Me’, Nelly is known to be one of the biggest stars of the new millennium. So what are you waiting for? Don’t miss this amazing event. Street food fest


Beat the heat and head on down to the Street Food Market. With over 20 pop-up concepts and food trucks, this venue is sure to be any foodie’s paradise. There is a wide variety of street food vendors selling great food options. There will also be a live DJ keeping the atmosphere upbeat. The event is for all ages so bring the family for an enjoyable and mouth-watering experience. Saturday 6th May

Light up the darkness 2015lightcandle2

Join the walk that commences in complete darkness and ends in warmth and light as the sun rises. This symbolic event aims to create an impactful occasion that highlights the struggles of people suffering from mental health and to deliver a powerful message about hope for the future. The unique event takes place in over 100 venues across the world and starts here in Abu Dhabi at the Nation Riviera Beach Club and ends at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. Registration required. Get in the spirit of the season


Get ready for Ramadan as Style Studio, a Pakistani multi-brand clothing store, will be hosting an event to showcase some amazing designs. The event will bring 14 designers to our city including Afifa Shah and Sofia Naveed Lari who will exhibit their creations in the Abu Dhabi Ramadan Exhibition. Free.
