We’re ready to race as amateur sports season kicks off

Whether it’s cycling, running, swimming or all of the above, amateur race season offers plenty of opportunities to set new fitness goals

When it comes to sporting events, Abu Dhabi’s amateur athletes are being treated to more and more opportunities each year. As we come round to winter, events season is upon us, with a slew of amateur sporting competitions to train for and take part in.

Here is our preview of some of the best events coming up in the next few months and beyond, so you can start training to set new challenges and achieve new fitness goals.

SWIMMING

7th Oct & 25th Nov
Abu Dhabi Junior Aquathlon

Taking over the calm water of Al Bateen Beach, this annual race welcomes young sports enthusiasts of all ages and abilities to test their stamina with a fun swim and run event. Compete individually, with your siblings or in a team with schoolmates, and choose from four categories. Levels begin at a Tiny Tri, which includes a walk, paddle or swim in knee-deep water followed by a 100m run, and go up to a super sprint with a 375m swim and 2.5km run. From AED 90. 7am. Le Méridien Abu Dhabi Open Water Swimming Festival

5 Star Aquathlon

Palatial surroundings make for a picturesque race where athletes of all ages and abilities are expected to take over the pristine facilities of Emirates Palace. Swim in calm water before running through the grounds and ending with a beach sprint. Choose from a tiny triathlete, junior, super sprint and sprint course. Al Ain Cycle Race

Abu Dhabi Sports Council challenges riders to a tough climb up Jebel Hafeet. If you’re an experienced cyclist looking to challenge your fitness or work on your hill climbs, then this race is a great chance to do so, with a 47km short course and 67km long course to choose from. Abu Dhabi Sports Council Cycle Race

Throughout the season, from October until April, Abu Dhabi Sports Council will host a series of cycling races across the emirate. Test your pedal power with fun but challenging rides. Al Wathba Cycle Race

A great community cycling event, the Al Wathba Cycling Series is back with a night race. The event features three categories for juniors, ladies and men, with 16km for children and 48km for adults. Grab your road bike and get ready to improve your cycling skills in a friendly race. AED 80 for juniors aged nine to 17, AED 100 for adults. Al Wathba cycling track. Westin Kilomarathon

A kilo what? Playing on the concept of a full marathon, which is 26 miles, a kilomarathon covers a distance of 26.2 kilometres. This annual race hosted by The Westin Golf Resort & Spa will cover six laps around the pristine grounds of the national golf course at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, including garden, pavement and sand surfaces. Shorter distances of 4.4km and 13.1km are also available for beginner runners to boost their fitness. From AED 175. Sas Al Nakhl. Start time TBC. Abu Dhabi Sports Council City Run

Kicking off in Al Ain on 21st October, this series of community runs will offer a great opportunity for amateur athletes to set new goals with each race. Striders Half Marathon and 10k

Never run a half marathon before? This could be the perfect event to kickstart your endurance racing career. Taking place across the flat roads around Yas Island, the course starts at Yas Waterworld and goes past the island’s top attractions including Yas Marina, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and Yas Mall. With support stations every three kilometres, it’s a great entry level race for new long-distance runners. Not ready to tackle 21km? Then sign up for the 10k race. From AED 260. Time TBC. Train and travel

14th Nov 
2XU Triathlon Championship

Neighbouring Dubai offers more opportunities for amateur athletes looking for a bigger challenge and this triathlon is a great way to do just that. The scenic race in Hatta is being billed as the toughest triathlon in the UAE with a swim in Hatta Dam, cycle over Generator Hill and run up a steep incline through beautiful wadis and natural scenery. Boost Bahrain Open Water Series

RAK Half Marathon

Billed as the UAE’s top road race, this half marathon around the streets of Ras Al Khaimah witnesses top-class runners as well as those new to longer distances take to the cordoned off streets. If you’re looking to gain more confidence on your bike, practise riding in a group or cycle longer distances, this annual cycling race is a great option for riders of all levels. ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi 2018

Want to complete a triathlon alongside some of the best athletes in the world? The International Triathlon Union’s race series returns in 2018 with stellar names like Javier Gomez and Tom Bishop competing in the capital. The world class event also allows amateur athletes, and even juniors, to get in on the action with varying distances for you to tackle, including sprint, Olympic and middle-distance.
