PROGRESS: Sheikh Mohammed reflects on decade in tenure

HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, posted an open letter to the people of the UAE.

The post, shared on professional networking website LinkedIn, aimed to inform and inspire citizens and residents in the region by highlighting the achievements and hardships the nation has faced this past decade.

One of the main themes is the UAE’s 2021 target for the “advancement and glory of our nation and the betterment and happiness of our citizens”.

While various objectives need to be met, HH insisted that “the formula is straight forward: national development based on core values, led by youth and focused on a future in which everyone achieves happiness”.

A major topic in his letter is the desire to give the youth of his nation a voice, recognising that a “failure to respond effectively to the aspirations of young people, is like swimming against the tide”.

Sheikh Mohammed stated in his letter that over the past decade the economy has “doubled in size” and has witnessed a rise in “commercial opportunities” that have provided a more stable economy for the UAE, despite a decline in oil price; one of his main priorities is to diversify the economy away from the dependence on oil.

Despite a global financial crisis and economic slowdown, the UAE has managed to thrive in all sectors and make continuous progress.

His Highness highlighted that there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure one hundred percent of the goals are met by 2021, stating: “There is no room for procrastination, no time for delay. I will lead this effort and the teams behind it personally.”
