Plastic is not so fantastic at this supermarket

A local supermarket has pledged to slash its plastic usage with the launch of a new campaign to get shoppers thinking more eco-consciously.

From 16th June, branches of Waitrose across the capital will begin charging for plastic shopping bags in a bid to encourage customers to bring their own reusable options as part of a campaign launched in celebration of World Environment Day.

With each single-use plastic bag priced at 25 fils, the initiative will be implemented in five stores, including the Boutik Mall, Etihad Towers and Al Zeina locations for 12 weeks, ending in September.

Established with a view to rolling out the drive to all its UAE stores, the new eco-friendly campaign will also introduce an in-store bag exchange for shoppers, where carrier bags from any shop can be deposited for other customers to use.
