According to environmental group Plastic Oceans, more than eight million tons of plastic are dumped in our seas every year.
With this in mind, the UAE has vowed to tackle the use of plastic products with the launch of a new eco-conscious awareness campaign.
Led by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the Responsible Consumption for Sustainable Future initiative was launched to coincide with Earth Day on 22nd April with an aim of raising awareness of plastic usage.
Hinged on three pillars – reduce, reuse and recycle – the campaign targets businesses and consumers alike through workshops and seminars to nurture a more eco-friendly population.
The drive is in line with recent efforts from local companies and entities to curb plastic consumption across the emirate.
Brands such as Aloft Hotels, Freedom Pizza and Ripe Market have all sought biodegradable alternatives in their quest to quit plastic, while Latin restaurant chain COYA recently pledged to stop using single-use straws, stirrers and napkins across all its locations.
