Pizza. It’s one of the most popular foods in the world – don’t argue, it is.
In the US alone, an average of 100 acres of the cheesy pie is eaten every day – that’s enough to cover over 66 football pitches.
It’s so popular it’s even been delivered to space, when Pizza Hut took our love of a good slice galactic for the first time in 2001.
Luckily, in Abu Dhabi we don’t need to travel that far to enjoy pizza as we’re spoiled for choice with dozens of pizzerias dotted across the city ready to serve up a slice or two.
Itzza Pizza has recently turned heads on social media, laying down the gauntlet and challenging foodies to tuck into its metre-long pizza – but I’ll save that experience for another time.
The venue is cosy, with just three tables for dining in, decorated with everything from bottles of colourful olive oil to Italian-inspired artwork – but the main attraction is the amazing pizza oven.
First of all, when it comes to pizza, I judge the overall quality based on three variables: base, sauce and toppings – simplicity is so satisfying.
The diavolo comes topped with spicy salami and a punch of chilli flakes, which add welcome heat to the tangy tomato sauce and excellent stone-baked style crispy base. For me, it’s hard to go wrong with good ingredients complemented by stringy mozzarella and this is a winner.
My pizza pal opts for the rocket pizza, topped with fresh rocket leaves, cherry tomatoes and shaved Parmesan. The combination of the sweet cherry tomatoes, peppery bite of rocket and rich Parmesan marry together well and make for one tasty pizza.
Bringing the house down, and our meal to a close, is the Nutella calzone. A chocoholic’s dream, the indulgent, sticky, gooey pocket of chocolate dough is a great end to the meal – and the perfect pud to put you in a food coma.
Overall, the pizza is good quality, the service friendly and we’re impressed enough to consider going back to try the metre-long version sometime in the future.
