Pioneering research to shed new light on the UAE’s national fruit

From supplementing the diet of ancient desert dwellers to the modern age, dates are an important part of UAE culture.

But with so many varieties, an Abu Dhabi-based university is aiming to keep track of the sweet fruit by establishing a dedicated date gene bank.

Researchers at the Date Palm Development Research Unit at UAE University will aim to study 150 types of date as part of the project, with a focus on native varieties.

The unit was established in 1989 to lead UAE research on date palm production, and grows 60,000 to 80,000 plants each year.
