Work is underway on a unique medical centre that will be a first for the region.
HH Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, chief patron of the Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan Humanitarian and Scientific Foundation, has laid the foundation stone for the Proton Centre for Cancer Treatment in the capital.
The AED 220m centre, located in Al Bahia, is being built in partnership with British company Proton and is scheduled to open late next year.
Improving treatment for cancer patients in the UAE as well as those seeking care from abroad, the new centre will use proton technology to improve the treatment of tumours and boost recovery rates for cancer sufferers.
Proton therapy, also known as proton beam therapy, is a type of particle therapy that effectively targets cancer cells in the body, without causing any damage to the surrounding tissue and cells.
The centre is a key part of the ambition to provide advanced medical treatment in the Bahia area, including plans to construct centres for planting stem cells, treating chronic and dangerous diseases and a hospital.
Aiming to build a lasting legacy, a percentage of the profits from the centre, which aims to provide therapeutic services to 1,300 patients a year, will be used to fund humanitarian relief efforts and for the development of cancer research in the UAE.
