You need to see how polluted our beaches are

A team of 50 divers has helped to collect harmful debris off the coast of the Corniche.

Organised by Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD), in partnership with the Emirates Diving Association and the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club, the Together We Make A Difference campaign saw more than 1,490 kg of waste collected. Items removed from the sea included plastic bottles, aluminium cans, food wrapper containers, abandoned fishing lines and construction materials.

Dr Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, executive director of terrestrial and marine biodiversity at EAD, said: “There is an imminent need for us to keep beaches and diving sites clear of debris.

“The sensitive waters, species and underwater inhabitants must be looked after for future generations to come and for the sake of conserving our natural habitats.

“Toxic materials, plastics and waste can not only inhibit normal growth and reproduction, but also have fatal effects on marine species and the ecosystems they live off.”
