Experience India at this three-day extravaganza

Indian culture is under the spotlight at this returning cultural festival in the capital this coming weekend.

Pure Bhangra

Here’s a rare chance to celebrate India’s vibrant culture at its best.

Experience everything this South Asian country has to offer, and so much more, at Mega Mela from 31st October to 2nd November at du Arena on Yas Island.

Think Indian culture and the dance-a-licious sounds and sights of Bollywood play out in the mind. (They do in ours)

Quick mind-boggling fact alert – It’s said that India releases as many as 1,600 local movies every year and Bollywood soundtracks account for nearly 80 percent of the nation’s music revenue.

But you won’t have to travel to India to meet two of Bollywood’s mega stars, as they are coming to us, right here in Abu Dhabi.

Kanika Kapoor

Bollywood singing sensations Kanika Kapoor (‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan,’ ‘Jugni Ji’) takes to the stage on 31st October, followed by Ankit Tiwari (‘Sun Raha Hai,’ ‘Galliyan’) on 1st November.

Also playing is UAE-based vocalist and guitarist Fahmil Khan, who heads to the stage on 2nd November to play pop, Sufi, retro and modern Bollywood tunes.

The sounds continue with  Bhangra, a traditional folk dance from the Punjab region courtesy of Pure Bhangra from Dubai, and on the decks is DJ Shadab  remixing Indian film soundtrack sets.

Tonnes more to see and do

Once you’ve danced yourself dizzy, go shop and bargain your way through the stalls selling Indian fashion and jewellery, ornaments and spices at the Indian bazaar.

Glam up like your Bollywood idols at the make-up master classes and unravel Indian beauty secrets along the way. There are even bridal makeup tips on offer, whether you’re a bride-to-be or just plain curious… It’s always good to be ready, we say!

Don’t forget the kiddywinks!

The designated kids’ zone features fun rides and activities – think merry-go-rounds, swings, carnival-style games, inflatable castles and arts and crafts centres where kids can create their own bangles and Diya lights or oil lamps made from clay.

Did you know that cricket is the most popular sport in India? Well, you do now!

Kids get to hone their cricket skills in the daily  junior coaching sessions and masterclasses. Their new-found cricketing skills can then be put to the test during friendly matches.

Spice up your life!

India’s awash with fabulously rich cuisine, differing from province to province. (yes, you didn’t need us to tell you that, but just in case…)

A walk around Abu Dhabi itself pays testament to this, with no shortage of venues from small hole-in-the-wall eateries to upscale restaurants all serving up tasty Indian fare.

Yas Mega Mela is no different, and foodies will be in food heaven trying a whole lot of Indian delicacies over the course of three days… that’s a lot of food!

Head to The Taste of India Experience zone where tasty bites inspired by dishes from the subcontinent are on the menu. It’s a great opportunity to explore (and eat) as many Indian delicacies as humanly possible.

You might be full to bursting but you’ll also be learning.

India’s celebrity chefs Vicky Ratnani, Sandeep Sreedharan and Sanjay will be on hand during live-cooking demos and throwing up a host of different challenges. Learn the tricks of the trade from these kings of the kitchen.

Did we mention the fireworks?

They’ll be setting the nightsky ablaze each and every night in celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights.

See you there!
