The concept of street food is taking off in the UAE but decent, authentic options here are still few and far between, and don’t even get me started on some of the extortionate prices.
Thankfully, my opinion is shared by Saied El Hakim, who set up Burro Blanco in Al Khalidiyah. A trained and experienced chef with a passion for good food and quality ingredients, Saied wanted to fill a void in the market by offering top notch, fuss-free street food.
Offering delivery and take-out only, Burro Blanco serves burritos, tacos, bowls and other Mexican specialities. The concept is simple: choose a street bite from the menu or build your own burrito, taco or bowl, customising your order by choosing a base, protein, sauce and other fillings. There are plenty of options, too, even for vegans.
The avocado fritas are a refreshing spin on typical soggy, deep-fried street snacks. The lightly battered strips of avocado are flash fried and served with a creamy chipotle dip and a salsa of your choosing – try the mild one, it’s incredible.
Despite the various elements that go into my burrito – I opt for cilantro lime cauliflower rice, refried pinto beans, a roasted pumpkin squash, sautéed pepper and onion mixture, roasted mild salsa and guacamole – it’s surprisingly light as the carbs and protein are well balanced. That said, you certainly won’t be leaving hungry.
Currently, Burro Blanco only delivers to select areas near its outpost – unfortunately that’s nowhere near the office – but I say it’s well worth the trip to Al Khalidiyah to get your burrito fix.
