A team representing the UAE has won an international sporting event for the very first time.
Team Abu Dhabi won the Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship title after six highly competitive races were held across the season.
The motorboat racing competition is the highest class of inshore powerboat racing in the world and has been held annually since 1981.
During the season, points are given to teams depending on their finishing position, with 20 points awarded to the winner, 15 for second place and so on.
Coming out on top this year, Team Abu Dhabi clinched the title after the final race of the season, the Grand Prix of Sharjah, on 15th December, securing a total of 131 points, 50 points ahead of the second placed Team Sweden.
In the final race, Team Abu Dhabi’s Alex Carella led from the start to win not only the race, the championship and the fastest lap trophy but also top the drivers’ standings, finishing 22 points clear of the nearest competitor, Philippe Chiappe.
Across the season, the team took first place in three of the six rounds of the championship, including the Grand Prix of France and the Grand Prix of Liuzhou China.
