Artificial intelligence considered for use in capital hospitals
Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, SEHA, has announced the creation of a specialised committee focussed on artificial intelligence (AI).
The newly minted group will focus on exploring how AI and the implementation of the futuristic technology could be applied to the practice of medicine here in the UAE. It will be learning about best international practices, tracking developments and seeing how these could be applied to healthcare in Abu Dhabi.
AI is the development of computer systems to carry out tasks that normally require human intelligence. The technology is being explored by many sectors and has already been applied in fields such as manufacturing and transportation.
AI has potential to be used in the healthcare sector for diagnosis, remote patient monitoring and surgery, among others uses.
Dr Al Darmaki, acting CEO at SEHA, said: “Artificial intelligence is a new concept that diagnoses and treats most diseases in a smart way, in accordance with the highest technical standards and the latest technological practices. It will revolutionise the health sector in the UAE.”
Technological advances in medicine are already being applied in some hospitals in Abu Dhabi where doctors are able to use 3D technology to perform virtual surgery for complex medical cases.
Most recently, 3D printed models allowed doctors to save the lives of babies with congenital heart disease by conducting virtual surgery on models of their hearts. This allowed doctors to study the anatomy by physically holding it in their hands and rotating it, before continuing with surgery, which would have been too risky without access to a virtual replica beforehand.
