Here’s why you need to ditch disposable cups

Coffee lovers can now benefit from being more responsible when getting their favourite drink.

Costa Coffee UAE has launched a new initiative to reduce waste in the UAE and to reward customers who bring reusable cups by giving them a AED 2 discount off of their purchase at any branch across the UAE.

Disposable coffee cups can have a detrimental effect on the environment if not recycled properly due to the presence of microplastics in the material that can harm marine life and end up in the oceans.

According to The Independent, in the UK alone, half a million disposable coffee cups are littered each day and less than 1 percent of all disposable coffee cups are properly recycled.

Shemaine Jones, head of marketing at Costa Coffee UAE, said: “We are committed to creating a more sustainable environment for future generations and this AED2 offer represents a true mark of our ambition to reduce waste.

“It’s more important than ever for companies to take responsibility for their part in helping to reduce waste and we believe that in order to bring about change, we need to help our customers make small shifts in their behaviour, to eventually lead to positive habits.

“By encouraging customers to bring in reusable cups, we hope to foster that change and make a lasting impact for good.

“Paper cup wastage is a key issue across the UAE and the launch of this promotion is just the start of our pledge to reduce waste this year.”

Customers are encouraged to share their pictures using reusable cups by using the hashtag #CostaforChange on social media.
