Here’s a way to reduce food wastage during Ramadan

Environmental group Emirates Nature-WWF has launched a campaign to reduce food wastage during Ramadan. 

The Save 1/3 initiative aims to encourage the community to be more conscious of their food consumption and shopping and cooking habits to decrease waste.

Globally, 1/3 of all food produced goes to waste and 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted annually. Food waste also has a negative impact on the environment  as food production generates pollution, consumes vital natural resources like fresh water, leads to deforestation, threatens wildlife and fish populations and emits toxic greenhouse gases. Changing spending habits, creating meal plans and measuring portions can all reduce food wastage and the negative environmental impact of food production. 

“We are all interconnected and depend on healthy and abundant food and natural resources for survival,” Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, director general of Emirates Nature-WWF, said. “This Ramadan, Emirates Nature-WWF encourages all residents and citizens of the UAE to reflect on their eating habits and learn how to shop smarter, cook smarter and eat smarter. 

“Through our Save 1/3 campaign, we hope to support the UAE in addressing the global issue of one third of food produced going to waste.” 

In support of the campaign, Emirates Nature-WWF has also created the Yalla Green blog as a guide on how to shop and cook food more efficiently to help people reduce their food waste.
