With 2018 declared as the Year of Zayed, the capital is to pay tribute to the UAE’s founding father and his life with the construction of a permanent memorial.
Located on the Corniche at the intersection of 1st and 2nd Streets, the tribute to Sheikh Zayed will be unveiled in 2018 and will commemorate the achievements of his 33-year reign and the legacy he left for future generations.
With the aim of highlighting the late ruler’s life, achievements and values, the monument will span 3.3 hectares with a central plaza featuring a large-scale public artwork, as well as landscaped gardens.
As the man who united the nation in 1971, Sheikh Zayed’s reign was characterised by tolerance, giving and progress, and he paved the way for the education of women and environmental protection, as well as developing Abu Dhabi’s prosperity with the export of oil.
Commenting on the memorial and Sheikh Zayed’s legacy, Ahmed Al Za’abi, deputy minister for presidential affairs, said: “It is our duty as a nation, and our future generation’s obligation, to recognise and remember Sheikh Zayed as a symbol of humanity and unity for generations on end.
“This memorial is a strong testament to Sheikh Zayed’s legacy, and as per the directives of the wise leadership, is an affirmative recognition of the founding ruler’s pioneering leadership that created a clear roadmap to build and strengthen our nation.”
