Every restaurant has a concept, but 49ers The Gold Rush takes its Wild West theme quite seriously.
We are greeted by a large portrait of a cowboy as we step out of the elevator directly into the restaurant, which is located on the penthouse level of Al Diar Dana Hotel.
The thematic décor continues with the bust of a cowboy and strategically placed horse saddles throughout the space. Every surface is wooden in the bar area and the lights are low, creating a cosy, pub-like feeling.
Surprisingly, the dining nook is light and bright with tables covered in white linen and 180-degree views of the city. We choose a table near the wall of windows and look out over the city, marvelling sites from Al Maryah Island all the way over to the glistening dome roof covering Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The menu features American cuisine and specialises in premium cuts of meat prepared to perfection. We start with golden fried chicken tenders served with honey mustard sauce for dipping and the Wild West wings, a house favourite, which are deep fried and tossed in a savoury, homemade barbecue sauce.
We move on to mains, which are all generously paired with a house salad, steamed vegetables, corn on the cob and a choice of baked potato, wedges or steak fries. My guest enjoys a rib-eye while I tuck into a succulent filet. The tender, well-prepared meat is served with béarnaise and peppercorn sauce on the side, allowing me to season to taste.
To finish off the meal, we share a slice of warm, homemade all-American apple pie à la mode. The sweet, yet spicy smell of cinnamon fills the air as we savour bites of crumbling crust, cooked apples and vanilla ice cream drizzled in caramel sauce.
As we enjoy sweeping views of the city just after sunset, more guests arrive and the pub area starts to come alive as this is clearly an establishment for adults who want to have a good time and a great meal at an affordable price.
