More than 1,000 eco-friendly taxis are set to be on Abu Dhabi’s roads by the end of the year.
Tawasul Transportation Company is leading the drive, having purchased hybrid vehicles to replace its current fleet of 1,347 taxis. Fuelled by a combination of electric power and petrol, the Toyota Camry hybrid vehicles are a step in the right direction for Abu Dhabi’s green transport plans.
The new models feature innovative regenerative braking systems, allowing vehicles to capture the momentum – or kinetic energy – created when a driver brakes, and turn this into electricity that recharges the car’s on-board battery, the result being that the cars can cover a lot of ground before the need arises to refuel.
Arabia Taxi, another Abu Dhabi-based company, has also joined the electric changeover, purchasing 454 of the hybrid cars.
Saud Abbasi, managing director of Al Futtaim Toyota, said that the hybrid model delivers 70 percent better fuel efficiency, and can greatly decrease operating costs for taxi operators as gasoline expenses are reduced significantly.
The developments are a positive move for Abu Dhabi in achieving its goal of reducing harmful carbon emissions by 70 percent by 2050.
