We found out how to put some spring into our fitness routine

“I’m so happy I could bounce!”

Winnie the Pooh’s best friend Tigger certainly has a spring in his step and I think the bouncy, flouncy, fun-loving tiger is on to something there. Sometimes you just need to let loose and jump around.

Kangoo Jumps is just the solution and it certainly put a smile on my face.

What is it? 

Kangoo Jumps is an exercise routine revolving around safe ‘rebound’ shoes. Designed for cross-training activities, the boots are suitable for people of all fitness levels, but add a new dimension to a normal aerobic exercise class.

Tone Fitness is one of the only centres in Abu Dhabi to offer Kangoo Jumps classes, catering specifically to women at its ladies-only studio located between the bridges.

When I strap into the boots for my first class, I feel a bit like a wobbly newborn giraffe as I rock back and forth on the curved base. But as instructor Hala guides me
into the studio and begins the class, I soon find my balance. Plus, I’m told that only one person has ever fallen over and it was because they were probably trying to mimic the Footloose routine.

During the 60-minute class, we work through various tracks with plenty of cardio work from dancing, plus strength exercises like push-ups, squats and core work.

What are the benefits?

First of all, Hala explains that the spring system in the boots work like shock absorbers. So unlike jumping on solid ground, there’s less impact and potential damage to your joints.

You’ll also work on stability and strengthen your core, particularly with simple exercises like squats, as you find your balance on the curved boot base.

Each boot weighs 2.5kg. While you may not feel this as you’re jumping around at first, you’ll certainly feel the weight as the class goes on and your legs tire.

But when you move down on to the mat to work on leg lifts, donkey kicks and bicycle core exercises, that’s when you really feel the heaviness of the boots as you try to counteract the force of gravity and keep your boot-laden legs from thumping onto the floor.

Kangoo Jumps potentially has the best of both worlds. Without being too challenging, it comes with plenty of benefits but will put a smile on your face as you put some spring into your routine.
