As part of our new Sunday Series, every week we bring you a new expert advice column to make the most of your life in Abu Dhabi. This week, Chris Wraithmell, head of fitness at Advantage Sports, tells us how you can begin to get more active and start to see small victories on the bathroom scales.
Trying to lose weight? You might have many questions. Where do you start? Buy a gym membership? Hire a personal trainer? Start eating better? The options are endless.
For me, the starting point for anyone wanting to drop a few (or a lot of) excess pounds is always far simpler: Walking.
The difficulty with something so simple, is that people don’t buy into it. Losing weight is supposed to be difficult, and involve crazy amounts of exercise and horribly restrictive dieting, isn’t it?
Well, I’m sorry to say it doesn’t have to.
Have you heard your friends and colleagues talking about how many steps they’ve done so far today?
Ten thousand steps per day is the magic number your iWatch, Fitbit or Garmin device will target you on. But what’s so special about 10,000 steps? What’s wrong with say, 8,000?
Other than it being a nice round number, there is also a bit of science behind it. Ten thousand steps per day equates to roughly eight kilometres of walking – that’s a decent distance. And in turn, that eight kilometres of walking will burn off roughly 500 calories.
So if all you did was walk 10,000 steps every day, over the course of a week you would burn 3,500 calories.
Now that figure is very important. Studies by scientists have shown that one pound of body fat contains around 3,500 calories. So for 10,000 steps of daily activity, you could burn off one pound of fat. That’s not a bad deal, is it?
But the most important part of this, for me, is that walking is easy to do, it costs nothing and is very sustainable – these are the three things that create consistency, which really, is the secret to weight loss.
