As part of our Sunday Series, every week we bring you a new expert advice column to make the most of your life in Abu Dhabi. This week, Chris Wraithmell, head of fitness at Advantage Sports, helps to dispel rumours that certain foods that make us fat.
Despite common misconceptions, there aren’t any particular foods which make us fat. Bread, sugar, chocolate, cake, butter, popcorn, rice… How many times have you heard people say that one of these things makes them fat? It’s rubbish.
The truth is that any of the above can be consumed and enjoyed as part of a consistent and well-balanced eating plan, regardless of whether you have 1lb or 100lbs to lose.
I don’t believe in banning foods from our clients’ diet plans as I know from experience that it just causes more harm than good.
What always happens when you tell yourself you’re not having something? It’s the first thing you crave, right?
So the ban becomes totally pointless. We are bombarded in the media to avoid certain food groups, detoxify sugar, eliminate wheat and gluten and limit protein intake.
Every day we read conflicting information about what foods are best for us to eat and what foods we must avoid, which help us detoxify and which are packed full of antioxidants.
The truth is, most of it is honestly absolute nonsense, designed to encourage you into buying something.
What I’m not suggesting is that you can go right ahead and consume everything you like whenever you feel like it because that’s just not going to end well.
What I am saying is that if you consistently eat well and exercise regularly, then there is absolutely no reason to ban foods you enjoy from your life.
If that doesn’t yield results, then you’re either eating too much or not exercising enough.
Of course a degree of common sense is required with all of this, too. If eating lots of bread makes you feel sluggish and bloated, then minimise it. If you get digestion issues when consuming dairy, then avoid it. If too much caffeine makes you jittery and then sends you into a tired slump then reduce it.
If opening a packet of cookies, means you have to finish the entire bag then… Well, You know where I am going with this.
It is never one thing that makes us fat or keeps us away from looking and feeling our very best. Consistency beats perfection. Every time.
