Established by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Emirati Experiences is a new, curated tourist activity for sightseers and residents alike, featuring guided visits to culture and heritage sites around the emirate.

From exploring a carpet and antique souk to pearling adventures, traditional handicrafts and tours around important landmarks, the initiative’s aim is to showcase UAE culture and heritage through the eyes of its people in nine distinct experiences.

The people that come to the UAE, they think it’s only about high buildings, modern things and that everything has to be the biggest in the world,” reflected Heba bin Redha, one of the initiative’s tour guides.

“They need to know that we also have a history, a culture and traditions,” she added. “Through my tours I show that, yes, we are number one in a lot of things, but how did we get here? We need to show where we started.”

As one of the emirate’s first tour guides, Heba is keen that other young Emiratis keep tradition and history alive by following in her footsteps.

“Everything became modern here quickly,” she observed. “We need to preserve our culture; if we don’t bring it from one generation to the next, it will get lost.

“We’re trying to preserve it, not only by letting people from other nationalities know about it, but also Emiratis themselves,” Heba added. “We need to keep it alive. It’s a big responsibility.”
