Humanitarianism, generosity and honouring the man that made the nation are to be the core values for the year ahead as the Year of Zayed gets underway with a number of initiatives and considerable donations for global causes.
Recognising the late ruler’s giving spirit, a landmark AED 10 million donation has been made by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, president of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood and supreme chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, to support global initiatives by Emirates Red Crescent.
The money will be used to aid those living in areas of conflict and disaster in a bid to ease suffering, disease and poverty.
On local shores, minors and orphans across the UAE will receive vital educational support with AED 5 million worth of aid from Emirati donor Dawlat Mahmoud Al Mahmoud.
The sum, donated to the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation, will go towards providing scholarships for children in need.
The year dedicated to the founding father will also bring a new permanent monument to the capital.
Recently named The Founder’s Memorial, the commemoration to the late leader will be located on the Corniche and will be inaugurated in the coming months.
Covering an area of 3.3 hectares, the monument will feature landscaping in the form of native plants and shrubs, as well as an elevated walkway leading to a central plaza and large-scale public artwork to honour the ruler’s 33-year reign.
