Commuters will soon be able to wait for buses in comfort with the announcement of the largest air- conditioned shelter in the region.
The Department of Transport (DoT) declared construction of the mega bus shelter, which can accommodate up to 60 passengers and will be located opposite the main city bus terminal on Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street.
This latest development is just part of DoT’s comprehensive project that will see around 600 smaller bus shelters pop up across the emirate, including in Al Ain and the Western Region, by 2020.
A total of 100 bus shelters will make up the first phase of the initiative, which is due to be completed by the end of this year.
The modern bus shelters will be installed with air conditioners, kiosks for reloading bus cards and a smart device that will allow commuters to access bus routes and timetables in real-time.
Many of the new shelters will be built using recycled shipping containers, a trend that DoT hopes to continue with plans to convert more cargo container materials into bus shelters given their cost-efficiency.
The developments are in line with the government department’s goal to improve public transportation across the emirate to meet demands from the growing number of commuters.
