Awesome father and son tackle a triathlon every day

Seven triathlons, across seven emirates, in seven days. That’s the arduous goal for a dedicated father and son fitness team.

Nick Watson and his son Rio, 15, are no strangers to working up a sweat. The Watsons – better known as Team Angel Wolf – spend most weekends taking part in races around the UAE.

Now the duo is taking its biggest challenge yet – a 70.3-kilometre triathlon every day, for the next week. It’s all in a bid to raise awareness, acceptance and inclusion of people of determination in the run-up to the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.

Rio, known by family and friends as ‘Angel’, who has a rare chromosome disorder, joins lifelong triathlon fan and former Royal Marine Nick on races thanks to specially-adapted equipment, supported by Rio’s mum Delphine and younger sister Tia, aka ‘Little Wolf.’

Each day, Nick will swim 1.9 km, bike 90km and run 21km, using a kayak, bike and a disability running chair to bring Rio along for the ride. You can follow their adventure live here.

Speaking about the challenge, Nick said: “This journey will represent the biggest challenge of my life, taking my boy Rio who is a person of determination, across all seven emirates to raise awareness for the inclusion movement through sport and inspire a healthier global community.”

After fuelling up on porridge and bananas, the family set off from Fujairah on Sunday, 10th February and will race in Abu Dhabi on 15th February before crossing the finish line in Dubai on 16th. People are welcome to #TriWithRio and join the father and son team at about 3.30pm on the last 1km of each day.

The family’s challenge shares an important message of inclusion and awareness for people of determination in the lead-up to the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, hosted in the capital from 14th to 21st March. A total of 40,000 spectators are expected at the opening event in Zayed Sports City. Millions of viewers from around the world will tune in to watch the sports spectacle, which will see athletes with intellectual disabilities take part in disciplines including swimming, horse riding and basketball at world-class venues around Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
