With winter upon us, it’s time to take the fun and socialising outside to the terrace
With the scorching summer months a distant memory, restaurants and lounges around the capital have spruced up their outdoor spaces so we can make the most of the wonderful cool weather.
And why not? Coupled with great food and wonderful company, the city’s sights, whether it’s daytime or night, are a visual and sensory treat for anyone looking to appreciate the capital’s stunning beauty.
While it’s worth noting that Abu Dhabi is not short on venues that provide uninterrupted views of the city, there are some places that have become a hit among those looking for fine food and good views.
With that being said, we take a look at some of the best open-air spots for soaking up the winter breeze.
Perched on top of Aloft Abu Dhabi, this rooftop lounge has earned a reputation as one of the go-to places for those who dread the sight of plain walls and dusty windows. This chic venue is known for hosting a variety of events that stretch into the early hours. But what pulls the crowd is the great city view from above, giving guests a glimpse of the bright city skyline and the Arabian Gulf. Next to Adnec, Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street. Sat-Tue 5pm-2am, Wed-Fri 5pm-3am. Contact: 02 654 5138, relaxat12abudhabi.com
Balcon Lounge and Terrace
This outdoor rooftop lounge, which was renovated last year, serves tapas specialities plus Asian and Mediterranean fusion food and beverages, such as roasted wagyu bone marrow, laksa espresso with chilli-infused coconut foam and octopus carpaccio. While enjoying the food, guests can soak in the cool breeze at the private poolside cabanas or bar serving refreshments while staring at the stars. Southern Sun Abu Dhabi, Al Mina Street. Daily 3pm-1am. Contact: 02 818 4888, tsogosun.com
If you’re looking for a spot to catch the gorgeous sunset, then make your way to
this open-air Italian lounge and restaurant. True to its nature, the newly renovated venue serves authentic but fuss-free Italian cuisine. Equally impressive is the wonderful outdoor view complete with a garden courtyard filled with greenery and a wrap-around terrace nestled alongside the tall grass of the golf course. Enjoy the sights from the comfort of the sofa while sharing a drink and nibbles with families and loved ones – consider taking a jumper, too, as it gets chilly. Next to Radisson Blu Yas Island Hotel, Yas Plaza. Sun-Wed 5pm-1am, Thu-Fri 5pm-2am. Contact: 02 656 2000, facebook.com/filinigarden
Butcher & Still
With its rustic Chicago 1920s prohibition-era design and interior, few food venues in the city can compete with this restaurant in terms of character and even steak specialities. While its terrace is not as spacious as the other venues around, Butcher & Still’s boasts a magnificent outdoor seating area that provides a stunning waterfront view of the Arabian Gulf and skylines of Al Maryah Island and Al Zahiyah. It’s a great spot to catch the fireworks during special occasions, too. Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi, Al Maryah Island. Daily 4pm-2am. Contact: 02 333 2700, butcherandstill.com
More than just serving pan-Latin cuisines, this popular restaurant is also well known for its stylish urban interiors. But even that is no match for its opulent terrace area that has easily captivated capital diners. The vast outdoor space means more seating (and standing) capacity, and the rustic wooden chairs, tables and décor all play in sync with the overall theme. The surrounding skyscrapers and busy city atmosphere below are all great views from above, adding an authentic metropolitan vibe for guests to soak in. The Hub, The Mall at World Trade Center Abu Dhabi, Al Markaziyah. Sun-Thu noon-3am, Fri 12.30pm-3am, Sat 10am-3am. Contact: 02 666 8066, butrinity.com
