Abu Dhabi’s NKD Pizza had us at “healthy”

Pizza is a treat loved all around the world.

Ever since emerging from the pits of Italy’s ovens in the 1700s, this humble, savoury dish has adapted to suit all cultures and palates.

But as people become more health conscious, the poor pizza has taken the flak for being a high calorie, cheese-heavy junk food.

Big name pizza brands have come up with creative ways to scale down the calorie count of their menus and win back the clean eaters.

New parlours have sprung up promoting healthy alternatives and challenging the more established outlets.

One of these players is NKD Pizza – the US brand that pitches itself as a healthier option, from the crust to the toppings.

NKD Pizza takes pride in its hand-tossed dough, made up of ten natural grains with prebiotic agave fibre and probiotics, and homemade tomato sauce that’s free from sugar and processed ingredients.

After winning the hearts of Dubai’s pizza lovers, it’s now time for Abu Dhabi to join the pizza party and we are happy to RSVP.

Ditching the dine-in set up, the Abu Dhabi branch entirely embraces the takeaway and delivery concept.

Why? People would rather eat pizza at home, probably in front of the TV, in their most stretchy pants, the owner reasons. The move also allows the business to save on operating costs. Win/win!

From facts to food – I dive in to try the Omnivore, a pizza loaded with pepperoni, hamburger, turkey ham and mixed bell peppers.

This is one of the store’s bestsellers and it’s easy to spot why. Its mix of meats will have carnivores cooing.

For those who like their pizza spicy, like me, the Firehouse is a must-try, with its rich mishmash of chillies – grisu, pimento and Gambia – mixed with pepperoni and cherry tomato to balance out the strong flavour.

Both pizza pies are filling without leaving us feeling bloated, thanks to the all-natural dough and thin crust significantly cutting down excess starch.

For sides, I order the crispy, battered chicken tenders and chicken wings coated with barbecue sauce. Both are worthy pairings to our pizzas, so we recommend ‘chicking’ them out.

With its commitment to health without scrimping on taste, NKD Pizza proves this staple’s ongoing ability to adapt through the ages.

We say: (Almost) guilt-free pizza. AED 114 for two. Shop 10-11, Bu Maharah Street, opposite Abu Dhabi central bus station. Sat-Wed 10.30am-midnight, Thu-Fri 10.30am–2am. 02 626 2653
